Lascaux Lino Puro L-40 (ref. 4510), 100% pure linen, 298 g/m² and 320 cm wide, for lining
The Lino Puro L-40 is a 100% pure linen fabric from Lascaux Colours & Restauro (Brüttisellen, Switzerland), supplied raw (roh, with no textile finish) and uncalendered, at 298 g/m² and 320 cm wide. It serves as a secondary support for lining paintings on canvas, and its width lets you cover large-format works in a single piece. Compared with the Portrait Linen 990 (ref. 4504, 175 g/m² and 226 cm), the L-40 offers more weight and 94 cm more width.
What is it used for?
- Secondary linen support for lining paintings on canvas, both for a first lining (first adhesion of a new support) and for relining (when it replaces an earlier one).
- Large-format works in a single piece. At 320 cm wide, it covers without seams any work whose shorter side, plus the stretching margins, fits within that width.
- Studio work starting from raw cloth. It is supplied with no textile finish, so the lining system chosen by the conservator can be prepared in the studio.

- 320 cm wide, 94 cm more than the Portrait Linen 990 (226 cm), to cover large works in one piece.
- 298 g/m², 70% more weight than the Portrait Linen 990 (175 g/m²).
- Raw and uncalendered. Calendering is the pressing between rollers used to smooth a textile, and the L-40 is supplied without it and without any textile finish.

L-40 or Portrait Linen 990?
- Lino Puro L-40 (ref. 4510, this product). 298 g/m² and 320 cm wide. For large-format works and when a heavier support is wanted.
- Portrait Linen 990 (ref. 4504). 175 g/m² and 226 cm. For works that fit within 226 cm and when a lighter linen is wanted.
- Both are 100% pure linen, raw and uncalendered, from the same Lascaux range. Width and weight are what set them apart.
Which adhesive is it used with?
Conservation literature documents lining with adhesives from different families, from glue paste to wax and synthetic materials (Hackney, Tate Papers no. 2, 2004). In our catalogue, each with the use its manufacturer gives it:
