The Lascaux Portrait Linen 990 is a 100% pure, long-fiber, untreated, and uncalendered Belgian linen, conceived as a lightweight textile support for conservation-restoration. Its medium-low grammage (175 g/m²) and fine, balanced weave make it especially suitable for interventions where a heavy relining linen would be excessive: small-to-medium format works, reversible perimeter reinforcements, localized patches, and museum replicas. As a greige fabric—without sizing, without adhesive, and without added starch—it offers a support free of prior chemical interactions with consolidants, adhesives, or primers. The natural texture remains intact thanks to its uncalendered finish.

Applications

  • Relining of small-to-medium format artworks with compatible fine original weave
  • Strip-lining (reversible perimeter bands)
  • Localized patches for artworks with tears or specific damage
  • Replacement of original support in paint layer transfers
  • Museum replica or documented copy
  • Support for contemporary art with a focus on museum durability

When not to use it

The Portrait Linen 990 is not the appropriate support for total relining of large works (>2 m²) or those that are structurally compromised. For these cases, we recommend the Lining Canvas 300, 320, or 380 from the Lascaux catalog, specifically formulated for that function with higher grammages (305–380 g/m²).

Technical Warnings

  • Pre-preparation: controlled humidification or low-temperature washing without detergent before mounting, to release weaving tensions and stabilize dimensionally. Lascaux does not document shrinkage percentage; testing a sample is mandatory.
  • Stretching: the fabric lacks sizing and has greater elasticity than a primed linen. Stretch in two or more progressive phases on a stretcher frame or relining loom.
  • Priming: required if used as a support for new work or replicas (animal glue with filler, or acrylic system like Lascaux Gesso). Not required if used as a relining linen.
  • Compatible adhesives: for use in relining, compatibility validated in C&R literature with acrylic dispersions (Plextol B500, Lascaux 498 HV or 360 HV), hot melts (BEVA 371) and traditional glues (sturgeon glue), always under reversibility criteria.
  • Roll storage: dry environment, stable temperature, no direct contact with floors or exterior walls. Do not crease.
