Tengujo Kashmir 9g Japanese Paper — The workshop's daily workhorse

Tengujo Kashmir 9g is a 9 gsm machine-made Japanese paper made from 100% abaca (Manila hemp, Musa textilis), with a declared pH of 6.7. At this weight, the paper is virtually invisible once adhered: it reinforces without being noticeable on the artwork.

When to choose abaca and when kozo?

Abaca and kozo are not the same fiber, although both are sold under the name "Japanese paper." Abaca comes from the leaf (Musa textilis) and its fiber measures 3-6 mm; kozo comes from the inner bark of the paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) and reaches 6-20 mm. This longer fiber makes kozo significantly more tear-resistant at the same weight.

For fine reinforcement, tear repair, and workshop use, abaca performs well and costs a fraction. For structural repair where the piece will continue to be handled—such as a book page in use, inlays, or spine reinforcement—kozo is the appropriate fiber.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it the same as a kozo Japanese paper?
No. This paper is 100% abaca (Manila hemp), not kozo. Be careful with this: some abaca tengujo is marketed with "kozo" in the name, and these are different fibers. "Tengujo" refers to the class of paper by weight and format, not the fiber: there is abaca tengujo and kozo tengujo. Here we declare what the manufacturer declares.
What adhesive is used to apply it?
Typically with wheat starch, methylcellulose, or consolidants like JunFunori®, depending on the case. The choice of adhesive depends on the artwork and the procedure, not the paper.
Can it be used for lining a whole canvas?
No. At 9 gsm, it is a fine reinforcement paper for localized repair. Structural work requires heavier weights or fabric.
Is it used in its natural color?
Yes, in its natural raw tone, unless the intervention requires specific chromatic integration.
Why do you indicate that it has no alkaline reserve?
Because it is not a defect; it is a characteristic that should be known. A paper without an alkaline reserve does not add alkali to the artwork—exactly what is desired for photography, cyanotypes, and pH-sensitive substrates. For the same reason, it does not comply with ISO 9706 (permanent paper), a standard that requires an alkaline reserve and does not apply to an intervention paper like this.
