Tengujo Japanese Paper 6 g/m² — the lightest in our Japanese paper range

6 g/m² Japanese paper in 100% manila fiber (Manila hemp, abaca fiber, Musa textilis), in a loose sheet of 480 × 940 mm. The manufacturer declares pH 6.7 and machine-made production. The whole sheet measures 0.4512 m² and weighs 2.71 g: it is the lightest in our Japanese paper range. The name tengujo is historically associated with kozo; this sheet is not kozo.

What is it used for?

The manufacturer does not declare any use for this item. What follows describes where this weight fits; the decision about the artwork is yours.

  • Document lamination — applying Japanese paper to the entire surface of a sheet.
  • Graphic works on paper — when adding the least possible mass over the image matters.

Why choose the Tengujo 6 g?

  • Machine-made — in the 2021 ICOM-CC (International Council of Museums Committee for Conservation) study, the authors looked for hand-made Japanese paper of 6 g/m² for their comparison and found none commercially available below 10 g/m².
  • Mass, which is data, not an adjective — 0.4512 m² of sheet and 2.71 g of paper. It is the lightest weight in our range that adds to the object.
  • Fiber and pH declared by the manufacturer — 100% manila and pH 6.7. The alkaline reserve is not declared, in either direction: they are two different measurements.
  • 480 × 940 mm sheet — covers larger-than-folio formats in one piece, without joints.

Which of these tengujo: the criterion is mass

We sell several Japanese papers of the same fiber that do similar things. The selection criterion is how much mass can be added to the object, not price or ease of handling.

  • Tengujo 6 g — the one that adds least: 2.71 g in the whole sheet. When the surface to be treated is large and the goal is to add as little as possible.
  • Tengujo Kashmir 9 g — same sheet format and same fiber, with 50% more mass (4.06 g); sold in a pack of 5 sheets. A bit more body for handling the sheet. It is the weight documented in the facing of the paint layer (facing) of the Allegoria con il trionfo di Firenze by Alessandro Allori, an oil painting on canvas from 1589 (Getty, Conserving Canvas).
  • Bib Tengujo — smaller sheet and the densest of those compared here.

  • Direct contact with photographic material: not endorsed. No PAT test (Photographic Activity Test, ISO 18916 standard — ISO, International Organization for Standardization) is on record, which is the test required to declare a material suitable for direct contact with photographs.
  • Alkaline reserve: not declared by the manufacturer, in either direction. It is a different measurement from pH.
  • Tensile and tear strength: the manufacturer publishes no data. With 2.71 g of paper in the whole sheet, we do not count on it providing tear resistance: if the piece will undergo handling or tension, this is not the material.
  • Fiber direction: not declared by the manufacturer. It should be checked on the sheet itself before cutting.
  • Permanence and ageing: no published data for this paper.
  • Uses: the manufacturer declares none, and recommends no adhesive. The decision about the artwork is the conservator's.

Frequently asked questions

What fiber exactly is this paper made of?
100% manila, which is the same as Manila hemp or abaca fiber (Musa textilis). This is the composition declared by the manufacturer. It is not a kozo paper, despite the name tengujo being historically associated with that fiber. Fiber length and pulping process are not declared.
With pH 6.7, am I introducing acidity to the artwork?
6.7 is what the manufacturer declares: a value slightly below neutrality. The alkaline reserve is not declared, in either direction — they are two different measurements, and there is no data for the second. If your case depends on that value, tell us and we will ask the manufacturer.
Can I use it in direct contact with photographs or a cyanotype?
Not on record. The manufacturer does not declare that use and there is no PAT test (Photographic Activity Test, ISO 18916 standard) published for this paper — which is the test required to declare a material suitable for direct contact with photographs. It also does not declare the alkaline reserve. Before putting it in contact with photographic material, write to us and we will check with the manufacturer.
Will it hold up if the document keeps being handled?

What adhesive should I use with this paper?
The paper is the support; the choice of adhesive and the reversibility of the intervention depend on the artwork and the case, not on the paper. The manufacturer recommends none. What is the fiber direction of the sheet?
The manufacturer does not declare it. It is a relevant piece of data for the work and we do not have it, so we do not assume it: it should be checked on the sheet itself before cutting.
