Bib Tengujo Japanese Paper 12 gsm · ART. 240 · 48 × 75 cm
12 gsm conservation tissue made from 100% abaca (Manila hemp, Musa textilis), with a pH of 7.1 as declared by the manufacturer: the only paper in CTS's Tengujo range declared above 7.0. It is the basis weight in the range with validated use in reinforcing folds and hinges of graphic works with moderate mechanical stress.Why choose Bib Tengujo 12g?
- pH 7.1 (manufacturer-declared) — the only one in the Tengujo range declared above 7.0. The other six basis weights are declared between 6.7 and 7.0 (the 22g Kinugawa, at 7.0). If the intervention criterion is not to add acidity to the assembly, this is the highest value declared in the range.
- No declared alkaline reserve — the manufacturer does not declare added carbonate, and the declared pH (7.1) is consistent with an untamponed paper.
- Body for a moving point — 12 gsm of abaca gives a hinge strip enough body to accompany the movement of a fold with moderate stress, without the mass that would cause the reinforcement to dominate the original sheet.
- Abaca fiber — 3–6 mm leaf fiber obtained by chemical pulp. This is the fiber family of the 6, 9, 12, and 18g basis weights in the range; the 22, 29, and 43g are kozo, a different fiber with different properties.
- What you get — a translucent sheet: when applied to the artwork, it allows the lines and colors underneath to be read, and the reinforcement appears as a veil, not a patch. It has more body than a 6 or 9g sheet — it can be handled dry without folding in on itself when lifted — and when torn wet, it leaves a frayed edge of loose fibers, which is what blends the splice with the original instead of creating a sharp edge.
- Sheet of 48 × 75 cm (0.36 m²) — the 75 cm length allows a full hinge for a large folio or folded map to be cut in a single strip, without splices on the working axis.

When to choose 12g and when another paper in the range?
The CTS Tengujo range is not a thickness scale: they are two distinct fiber families. The 6, 9, 12, and 18g basis weights are abaca: 3–6 mm leaf fiber, chemical pulp. The 22, 29, and 43g are kozo (Broussonetia papyrifera): 6–20 mm bast fiber, alkaline cooking. For the same basis weight, kozo withstands tearing much better. The real jump is between 18g and 22g, not in weight: here the material changes, and so does the price.
- Choose 12g (ART. 240) if you are going to reinforce folds or hinges with moderate mechanical stress, or if the intervention criterion is not to add acidity: it has the highest declared pH in the range (7.1).
- Go down to 9g Tengujo Kashmir (ART. 502) if the job is to repair fine tears or seal small losses, where minimal presence on the artwork is desired. Declared pH 6.7.
- Go down to 6g (ART. 561) if you need to veil or fully laminate a fragile document or brittle paper. Declared pH 6.7.
- Go up to 18g (ART. 508) if the job is perimeter reinforcement: same abaca, more body at the edge. Declared pH 6.7. This is the last paper in the abaca family: if 18g is not resistant enough for you, do not go up in basis weight within abaca — change fiber.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it have an alkaline reserve? And what is its relationship to pH 7.1?
These are two different things. pH describes the state of the paper as it leaves the factory; alkaline reserve is added carbonate to neutralize future acidity. This 12g has a declared pH of 7.1, and the manufacturer does not declare carbonate addition. If your protocol requires written confirmation from the manufacturer on this point, let us know and we will request it.
Can I use it to repair a tear on a page of a book that is still being consulted?
It is not the right choice. Abaca is short leaf fiber (3–6 mm) and this paper is intended for moderate mechanical stress. For a page that is turned and handled repeatedly, kozo fiber (6–20 mm) responds much better to tearing. Going up to 18g within abaca does not solve that case: it adds basis weight, not fiber length.
I'm hesitating between 9g and 12g. How do I decide?
Based on what the paper will do, not on thickness. The 9g Tengujo Kashmir is for fine tears and small losses: it stays put and is minimally visible. The 12g is for a fold or a hinge, meaning a point that will move: there you need some body. If the intervention criterion also includes pH, the 12g is declared at 7.1 and the 9g at 6.7.
What adhesive should be used to apply it?
The choice of adhesive depends on the support, the intervention criteria, and how much water can be applied to the artwork. The paper is the support for the reinforcement; the reversibility of the treatment is determined by the adhesive you choose, not the paper. What is the grain direction of the sheet?
CTS does not declare it in their data sheet and we do not assume it. In a 48 × 75 cm sheet, it is advisable to check it before cutting hinge strips: moisten a trim strip and observe which way it curls, or tear it in both directions — the clean, straight tear indicates the grain direction.
