JunFunori® Glas — The consolidant of choice for art conservation
JunFunori® is the purified form of Funori, a Japanese glue extracted from the red algae Gloiopeltis furcata. Unlike conventional Funori, JunFunori® is a standardized product with consistent properties, free of impurities, and with predictable results in every application.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a 1 g jar yield?
It is prepared in 100 ml of water at 1%, and depending on how you dilute it for each job, from 1 g you can obtain from 100 to 300-400 ml of consolidant. Since it is applied in thin layers, it is enough for quite a few interventions.
How is it prepared?
Dissolve 1 g in 100 ml of deionized water with gentle heat (bain-marie at ~55 °C, without boiling) until clear. Prepare a small amount: the solution lasts only a few days (store it cold). The dry jar lasts about 3 years.
Does it leave a sheen or saturate the color?
No. It leaves a matte finish and practically does not alter the appearance: it does not saturate or add shine. That is its great advantage for consolidating without changing the appearance of the work, unlike acrylic resins, which do tend to saturate.
Is it a strong adhesive, for structural bonding?
JunFunori is a consolidant: it penetrates, fixes, and stabilizes sensitive and powdery layers without altering the appearance of the work, and that is its field. When the bond needs to withstand stress—lining, marouflage, reinforcement strips—an acrylic adhesive like Lascaux 498 HV is preferable. If the job is heat-seal relining, the option is Lascaux 303 HV; and if you're not sure which one fits your work, write us on WhatsApp and we'll help you find out.
Do I need Japanese paper to apply it?
It is not mandatory. To consolidate powdery surfaces, it is applied directly with a brush. Japanese paper is only used in specific jobs (facings, fixing of flakes or lifting, paper reinforcement), where it acts as a support and funori as an adhesive.
Is heat or a thermal iron needed?
Not for consolidation with a brush: JunFunori is not heat-fusible; it consolidates when the water dries. Gentle heat (warm thermal spatula) is only used to set flakes or lifting, and always through Japanese paper or polyester film, never directly on the surface.
Is it reversible?
Yes. It is reversible and reactivatable with water and humidity.
