Wheat Starch — The Basis of Paste

1 kg package of wheat starch, the raw material for paste: the adhesive cooked in the workshop itself, used for paper-based work since before any synthetic alternatives existed.

When cooked in water, it forms a smooth-feeling paste with slow, controllable drying, which can be reactivated and removed with water without introducing solvents into the artwork. It is the go-to adhesive for mounting Japanese paper, reinforcing tears and rips, creating hinges, and laminating documents.

The paste is prepared cold, brought to a boil while stirring until it thickens, and then sieved before use. It should be consumed on the same day: without preservatives, it will ferment.
