Winsor & Newton Series 7 No. 7 in a wooden box — the Kolinsky sable round, handmade in England
Special-edition oak box containing a single brush: one Series 7 No. 7. It is not a set of several brushes. The brush is a short-handled round with Kolinsky sable hair, a seamless nickel-plated ferrule and a polished black birch handle. Like the other Series 7 rounds, it is suited to fine detail, lines and glazes, and it holds enough colour in the belly for fluid strokes.
What is it used for?
- Precision watercolour: fine detail, lines and glazes, the work for which the round shape of the Series 7 range is suited.
- Fluid, gestural watercolour strokes: the rounds in the range hold enough colour in the belly to sustain the stroke.
- Conservation-Restoration (C&R) of paintings: Kolinsky sable watercolour rounds are considered excellent for retouching (chromatic reintegration).
Why choose the Series 7 No. 7?
- Kolinsky sable hair: considered a very strong and springy hair, with an excellent point.
- Handmade in England. Series 7 brushes are made by hand by brush makers with more than 10 years of experience.
- Seamless nickel-plated ferrule, resistant to oxidation, and polished black birch handle.
- Dimensions of the No. 7 brush in the range: ferrule 4.9 mm in diameter and 25.5 mm of visible hair.
Presentation and storage
- Presentation: 1 Series 7 No. 7 brush in a special-edition oak box
- Cleaning: remove excess colour with a lint-free cloth, wash with a little mild soap in cold or lukewarm water—never hot—swirling the brush in the palm of your hand, and rinse until the water runs clear.
- Drying: squeeze out excess water with a cloth, reshape the tip with your fingers and leave it to dry upright, with the hair pointing up.
- Storage: store it only when it is completely dry.
Winsor & Newton is a brand of the Colart group. Brush made in the United Kingdom.
The limits, stated plainly
- No strong soaps or detergents: they can strip the natural oils from the hair. Wash with mild soap.
- No hot water: it can coagulate the paint and damage the brush. Wash with cold or lukewarm water.
- Do not store it damp. It goes back in its box or in a jar only when completely dry.
- Do not moisten the ferrule with your mouth: some pigments can be toxic. The tip is reshaped with the fingers.
Frequently asked questions
Does the box contain one brush or several?
One. The special-edition oak box contains one Series 7 No. 7 brush.
What are its dimensions?
The No. 7 round in the Series 7 range has a ferrule 4.9 mm in diameter and 25.5 mm of visible hair. These are brush dimensions, not box dimensions.
How do I clean and store it?
Remove the excess with a lint-free cloth, wash it with a little mild soap in cold or lukewarm water, never hot, and rinse until the water runs clear. Reshape the tip with your fingers, leave it to dry upright with the hair pointing up, and store it only when it is completely dry.
Do colour stains in the hair damage it?
No. Minor colour stains in the hair are normal and affect neither the performance nor the lifespan of the brush.
Why size No. 7?
Winsor & Newton set the standards for the Series 7 range in 1866, following a commission from Queen Victoria, whose preferred size was No. 7.
What other watercolour rounds do you have?
The MIR red sable round, ref. 300, natural hair, for watercolour. If you prefer synthetic fibre, the MIR Toray round, ref. 130. To go with it: the MIR extra-fine watercolour and the flower-shaped porcelain mixing palette.
