Winsor & Newton Artists' Oil Colour — Wooden Studio Box: eight Artists' oils, medium, solvent and tools in a wooden box

Wooden box of 18 pieces for oil painting: eight 37 ml tubes of Artists' Oil Colour, Liquin Original (alkyd medium) and Sansodor (low-odour solvent), plus the working tools. The eight colours come from Winsor & Newton's extra-fine oil range, with the pigment declared for each one. Made in France.

What is it used for?

  • Artistic oil painting on primed canvas or oil painting paper, the supports recommended for these colours.
  • Colour mixing from eight shades: Winsor Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, Winsor Blue, Winsor Green, Burnt Umber, Ivory Black and Titanium White.
  • Layered work with Liquin Original: it halves the drying time of the oil colour (touch-dry in 1–6 days, depending on the colour and the thickness of the film) and softens the brush marks.
  • Thinning colour, cleaning brushes and preparing mediums with Sansodor, which evaporates slowly and extends the blending time.
  • Gift for anyone who paints in oils.

Why choose the Winsor & Newton Wooden Studio Box?

  • Artists' Oil Colour range, Winsor & Newton's extra-fine oil colour: the range has 132 shades in 37 ml, 81 of them single-pigment.
  • Pigment declared colour by colour (pigment code in the Colour Index): PY74, PR83, PB15, PG7, PY43, PBr7, PBk9 and PW4 + PW6. Seven of the eight colours are single-pigment.
  • Permanence, colour by colour, on the Winsor & Newton scale:
    • AA — extremely permanent: Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Ivory Black and Titanium White.
    • A — permanent: Winsor Yellow, Winsor Blue (Red Shade) and Winsor Green (Phthalo).
    • B — moderately durable: Alizarin Crimson.
  • Liquin Original resists yellowing and increases the flow and transparency of the colour. Sansodor evaporates without leaving residue.

On the Winsor & Newton scale: AA (extremely permanent) Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Ivory Black and Titanium White; A (permanent) Winsor Yellow, Winsor Blue Red Shade and Winsor Green Phthalo; B (moderately durable) Alizarin Crimson.
What is Liquin Original for?
It is an alkyd medium that is mixed with the colour: it halves the drying time of the oil colour (touch-dry in 1–6 days, depending on the colour and the thickness of the film), increases flow and transparency, softens the brush marks, makes layered work easier and resists yellowing. It does not work as a varnish or as a final coat.
Does Sansodor smell?
It is a low-odour solvent. It is used to thin colour, clean brushes and prepare mediums; it evaporates slowly and extends the blending time. It is classified for aspiration hazard (hazard statement H304): keep it out of reach of children and, if swallowed, do not induce vomiting and call a poison centre.
Which support do I paint on?
On primed canvas or oil painting paper, which are the recommended supports. On paper, the edding A4 pad for acrylic and oil or its A3 version.
Which tools are included besides the colours?
Two synthetic brushes, a wooden mixing palette, a palette knife, a double dipper, a 2B pencil, a putty rubber and a cleaning cloth. To work with more brush formats, the MIR flat brushes and round brushes and, if you want a second mixing surface, the oval wooden palette for oil painting.
How do I dispose of leftover paint and solvent?
Never down the drain: Titanium White is toxic to aquatic life (hazard statement H411). Leftovers and containers go to a hazardous or special waste collection point.
