Charbonnel water-based gilding size — for size gilding on wood and plaster

A water-based size for laying gold leaf, made by Charbonnel, the Paris house founded in 1862 and now part of Lefranc Bourgeois. The manufacturer intends it for absorbent supports, such as wood or plaster, and for faster gilding work: the leaf is laid from about 30 minutes after application and up to 24 hours afterwards. It is worked and thinned with water.

What is it used for?

  • Laying gold leaf on wood: carving, mouldings and frames
  • Gilding on plaster: reliefs, mouldings and cast plaster pieces
  • Gilding that has to be laid within the same working day, in the studio or on a course: the leaf can be laid from about 30 minutes

Why choose Charbonnel water-based gilding size?

  • A stated working window. According to the manufacturer, gold leaf is laid from about 30 minutes after applying the size and up to 24 hours afterwards: you can gild in the same session or the next day, within that period
  • The manufacturer's method for absorbent supports: a first coat thinned 20 % with water and a second thin coat, undiluted
  • Not classified as hazardous under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging (CLP), according to the manufacturer's safety data sheet, and not restricted for transport
  • Made in France by Charbonnel (Lefranc Bourgeois, Colart group)

Frequently asked questions

How long do I wait before laying the gold leaf?
The manufacturer gives about 30 minutes from application, which is its stated drying time. From then on, the size accepts the leaf for up to 24 hours after it was applied.
How is it applied on wood or plaster?
The manufacturer's method is a first coat thinned 20 % with water and, on top, a second thin coat, undiluted.
Can it be burnished?
No. The manufacturer states that this size is not polished with a burnisher.
What do I do with the areas that are not gilded?
They are protected with a finishing varnish, as the manufacturer indicates.
How does it differ from the 1 L water-based size you also sell?
They are products from different manufacturers: this one is Charbonnel's, in a 118 ml bottle, and the other is CTS's, in a 1 L container. The small bottle suits gilding on small areas and courses; the litre suits a studio's consumption.
Does it contain preservatives?
Yes: three preservatives from the isothiazolinone family (BIT, MBIT and MIT), each below 0.1 %. That is why the label carries the EUH208 statement, which warns that it may produce an allergic reaction.
