Water-Based Gilding Size — Adhesive for gold and silver leaf
A solution of styrene-acrylic resins in water, used both for applying gold, real or imitation, and silver, real or imitation.
What is it used for?
- Fixing gold or silver leaf, real or imitation
Why choose this size?
- Water-based, styrene-acrylic formulation
- Not classified as hazardous under the CLP Regulation, per the manufacturer's safety data sheet
How to work with it
- Dilute with water in the 40-50% proportion given by the manufacturer and apply with a soft brush.
- For indoor use, on absorbent grounds such as wood and gesso.
- Lay the leaf after a time that, depending on ambient conditions, ranges from about 15 minutes to about 24 hours.
- Gives the finish typical of mixtion gilding, without burnishing.
- Minimum application temperature: 0 °C.

Frequently asked questions
Is it the same as oil size, 3h or 12h?
No. Those are oil sizes, for oil gilding (mordant). This is the water-based adhesive for laying the leaf.
Is it suitable for imitation gold?
Yes, it is compatible with both real gold leaf and imitation gold and silver variants.
Does it contain a preservative?
It contains an isothiazolinone preservative (CMIT/MIT 3:1, CAS 55965-84-9) at a concentration of 0 to 0.0015 %. That is why the label carries the EUH208 statement (see “Safety”).

- EUH208 — Contains reaction mass of 5-chloro-2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one and 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one (3:1). May produce an allergic reaction.
