Winsor & Newton Artists' Water Colour Sable, Round No. 12 — Watercolour Brush in Natural Kolinsky Sable Hair

Winsor & Newton round watercolour brush, No. 12, in natural Kolinsky sable hair, a hair of animal origin. Short birch handle, sculpted with a matte finish, and a seamless nickel ferrule. Handmade. The No. 12 is the largest of the twelve rounds in the range: 7.9 mm ferrule diameter and 30 mm of visible hair.

What is it used for?

  • Watercolour painting: the range brings together the most common and useful brush shapes for watercolour, and it was developed with the input of professional watercolourists.
  • Fine detail, lines and glazes: this is the work the rounds in this range are designed for.
  • Work that calls for precision and detail: the traditional round shape is the right one in that case.
  • In Conservation-Restoration (C&R), Kolinsky sable round watercolour brushes are used for retouching.

Why choose the Artists' Water Colour Sable round No. 12?

  • Natural Kolinsky sable hair.
  • Handmade, like all the brushes in the range.
  • Seamless nickel ferrule.
  • Birch handle, sculpted with a matte finish.
  • The largest of the rounds in the range: 7.9 mm ferrule and 30 mm of visible hair.

Presentation and storage

  • Presentation: 1 round brush No. 12, short handle
  • Dimensions: 7.9 mm ferrule diameter and 30 mm of visible hair
  • Drying: squeeze the brush out against a lint-free cloth, reshape the tip with your fingers and dry it standing upright, hair upwards, until the ferrule and handle are dry.
  • Storage: in a pot, only when completely dry.

The range is also marketed under the name Professional Watercolour Sable.

Brush care

  • Wash it in cool or, at most, lukewarm water: this way the paint comes out of the hair and the brush lasts.
  • With a little mild soap, which respects the natural oils in the hair.
  • Store it completely dry, in the pot and with the tip reshaped.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of the No. 12?
7.9 mm ferrule diameter and 30 mm of visible hair.
What hair is it made of?
Natural Kolinsky sable hair. It is a hair of animal origin.
What are the handle and ferrule made of?
The handle is birch, sculpted with a matte finish; the ferrule is nickel, seamless. It has a short handle: the range is made only with short handles.
Where does the No. 12 sit in the range?
It is the largest of the twelve rounds, which run from No. 00 to No. 12.
Is it the same brush as the Professional Watercolour Sable?
Yes. It is the name under which the same range is currently marketed.
How is it cleaned?
After each session, remove excess colour with a lint-free cloth and rinse under the tap. Wash with cool water and a little mild soap, rolling the brush in the palm of your hand, and repeat until the water runs clear. If you use lukewarm water, never hot: hot water coagulates the paint and damages the brush. Avoid harsh soaps, which strip the natural oils from the hair.
Do colour stains on the hair mean it is spoiled?
No. Slight stains are normal and do not affect the performance of the brush.
Is it used in Conservation-Restoration?
In Conservation-Restoration (C&R), Kolinsky sable round watercolour brushes are used for retouching.
