Escoda Barroco 1410 Brush — pointed round in Toray Oro fiber, for point work in watercolor
Pointed round brush from Escoda's Barroco series, made of Toray Oro synthetic fiber, with a short green handle and a ferrule with the company's triple grooving. Escoda, a brush maker from Sabadell (Barcelona) since 1933, places it in its watercolor range. On its own catalog scale, Toray Oro fiber rates 2 out of 6 for absorbency and 2 out of 6 for stiffness: it holds considerably less water than natural squirrel hair (petit gris) and is somewhat firmer.
What is it used for?
- Point inpainting (retouching) with watercolor or gouache, with the fine sizes (2/0 to 4).
- Localized application of gilding size (mixtion) when gilding or silvering small losses.
- Spot application of an adhesive or an aqueous consolidant in small areas.
- With sizes 12 and 22, broad watercolor washes and backgrounds.
Why choose the Escoda Barroco 1410?
- Used in Conservation-Restoration: in a bachelor's thesis at the Universitat Politècnica de València (2022), the Barroco 1410 No. 1 was used to apply the gilding size (mixtion) to the losses of a pedestal with a metal-leafed cloud.
- Handmade by Escoda, which states that it makes each brush one by one and joins ferrule and handle with its registered triple grooving.
- Each size has its diameter and length out published: you choose the brush by the size of the loss, not just by the number.
Packaging and storage

Its limits, stated plainly
- It holds considerably less water than natural hair (2 out of 6 versus 6 out of 6 for petit gris, on Escoda's scale): for broad, heavily loaded washes, use a natural-hair brush.
- It is a fiber designed for watercolor: if used with organic solvents, test beforehand and clean immediately.
- Escoda applies a factory sizing to the hair: wash it before first use.
Frequently asked questions
What is size 2/0?
Escoda numbers its finest sizes 2/0, 3/0, 4/0… The 2/0 is finer than the 0: 0.80 mm in diameter and 7 mm length out. Some lists show it as "00".
Which size should I choose for inpainting?
For point inpainting, the fine sizes: 2/0 to 4, depending on the size of the dot or line. Sizes 12 and 22 are for broad watercolor washes and backgrounds.
How does it differ from a petit gris brush?
On its catalog scale, Escoda rates Toray Oro 2 out of 6 for absorbency and 2 out of 6 for stiffness, and its petit gris 6 out of 6 for absorbency and 1 out of 6 for stiffness. It holds less water and is somewhat firmer.
How does it differ from the MIR Toray rounds (Ref. 130 and 131) that we also stock?
All three are pointed synthetic rounds. The Barroco 1410 is Escoda's, in Toray Oro fiber with a short handle: if your materials list asks for the Escoda Barroco 1410, this is it. It is also the one cited in the Universitat Politècnica de València bachelor's thesis for applying the gilding size (mixtion).
How do you care for it?
Wash it with water as soon as you finish, let it dry with the point formed, and store it with nothing resting on the hair.
