Toray MIR 700 Flat Brush — synthetic fiber for varnishing large surfaces
Flat brush made of Toray fiber (synthetic polyester developed by Toray Industries), manufactured by Pinturas MIR (Hospitalet de Llobregat, since 1933). Long varnished wooden handle and metal ferrule. It differs from a detail brush in its size: numbering No. 25 to No. 80, a wide format designed to cover large surfaces in one go, not for fine work.
What is it used for?
- Applying varnishes and finishes in restoration work — the central use the manufacturer itself declares for this reference.
- Varnishing large surfaces and continuous coats, thanks to the brush's wide format.
- General fine arts work, beyond varnishing, according to MIR's spec sheet.
Why choose the Toray MIR 700 Flat Brush?

The limits, stated
- It is not the reference for detail work or color retouching — the wide format (25-80) is designed for large surfaces; for a fine size of the same Toray fiber, there is the Ref. 132, and for color retouching the brand points to the Ref. 401 in Teijin fiber.
- MIR does not specify an application surface (canvas, panel, paper): use it with the same judgement you already apply when choosing a varnish for your surface, not as a manufacturer guarantee of compatibility.
- MIR does not publish a service life or a number of uses before the fiber loses its shape: durability depends on care and frequency of use, with no official figure to give you.

Which size should I choose, from 25 to 80?
The number is the fiber width in millimetres: No. 25 is 2.5 cm wide, up to 8 cm for No. 80. Choose by the width of the area, not the size of the piece: sections, edges and mouldings with 25-40; panels and large canvases in continuous strokes with 60-80. Between two, the larger one that fits without straying.
What's the difference with the Toray Ref. 132 brush you also sell?
The same synthetic Toray fiber, but a different size: this Ref. 700 is a wide flat brush (No. 25-80) for varnishing large surfaces, and the Ref. 132 is a fine brush (No. 00-24) for detail work and painting.
Is it natural or synthetic fiber?
Synthetic: Toray fiber (polyester), not natural hair.
What do you clean it with after using it with solvent-based varnish?
