The Dino-Lite AM4113ZT is a handheld USB digital microscope with an adjustable polarizer and the ability to turn off its own diodes while keeping the sensor active. These two properties are what differentiate this model from any ordinary digital microscope, as they open up examination techniques that rely on external light: raking light, transmitted light, and ultraviolet fluorescence. All three require the instrument's lamp to be off; they cannot be performed when it is on.

Applications

  • Surface examination before, during, and after treatment, with still images for documentation
  • Monitoring cleaning progress and residual residue
  • Recording with external illumination: tangential raking light, transmitted light from behind the object, and ultraviolet fluorescence
  • Observation on varnished and glossy surfaces, where specular reflection prevents viewing the underlying layer

Features

  • Diodes can be turned off with the sensor active (as declared by the manufacturer). This is the entry condition for external illumination techniques.
  • Adjustable polarizer, from parallel to crossed: reduces reflection on shiny surfaces.
  • MicroTouch: a touch-sensitive area on the body that triggers capture without using the mouse and without moving the microscope.
  • Measurement software with included calibration target: the magnification of each shot is calibrated and repeatable, allowing it to be recorded in a report.
  • Infrared filter

How to work with external illumination

  • Raking light: diodes off and a point source, lateral and as far as possible, tangential to the surface. Diffuse and coaxial light obscures exactly the surface damage that raking light reveals.
  • Transmitted light: diodes off and a source behind the object.
  • Ultraviolet fluorescence: focus with the lights on and turn them off for exposure. Any residual white light will erase fluorescence, which is a weak signal.
  • On glossy varnish, rotate the polarizer until the specular reflection disappears before judging what lies beneath.

  • Connection: USB
  • Includes: measurement software and calibration target
  • Use: examination and documentation in conservation and restoration

If you are looking for the model in this family advertised as "UV-IR" for reflected ultraviolet, the AD4113T-I2V is not the instrument: its 365 nm diodes emit parasitic blue light and the sensor is not filtered. Authors working with this range warn about this, precisely because of its widespread use.
