Liquitex Soft Body Naphthol Crimson Red — professional low-viscosity acrylic in a 946 ml bottle

Professional acrylic paint of low viscosity, water-based, in naphthol crimson red (Naphthol Crimson, no. 292). It is a bluish red of medium tone and semi-opaque, made from a single pigment: PR170 (Pigment Red 170 in the Colour Index). It has a lightfastness rating of II (very good) on the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) scale. It is not a diluted thick paint: the Soft Body range has a pigment load equivalent to that of the Heavy Body range from the same brand.

What is it used for?

The Soft Body range is suitable for:

  • Painting large surfaces and murals.
  • Fine detail, hard edges, blends, and gradients.
  • Layering and masking: it dries quickly and forms a flexible film.
  • Pouring, screen printing, and airbrushing.
  • Collage and mixed media, glazing, painting on fabric, and watercolor techniques.

The Soft Body range can be applied to stretched canvas, paper and cardboard, photographic paper, wood, fabric, glass, plaster and brick, clay, and ceramics.

Why choose Liquitex Soft Body Naphthol Crimson Red?

  • Lightfastness II (very good) on the ASTM scale.
  • A single pigment, PR170: a bluish red of medium tone, semi-opaque.
  • Pigment load equivalent to that of the Heavy Body range, in a low-viscosity paint (a feature of the Soft Body range).
  • Satin finish that retains subtle brushstrokes and has minimal color shift between wet and dry (a feature of the Soft Body range).
  • Series 2. Made in France.

Packaging and storage

  • Packaging: 946 ml bottle with a screw cap and integrated cannula. In the Soft Body range, the nozzle is tapered, has cut marks, and its width can be adjusted by trimming it with a utility knife; the bottle has a wide, shoulderless neck to make full use of the paint.
  • Store in the original container, tightly closed, in a cool, well-ventilated place. Avoid direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, both high and low. Keep away from strong acids and bases.
  • Shelf life: 5 to 7 years for the brand's acrylics, stored at room temperature, tightly closed, and free from contamination.
  • Contains 2-methylisothiazol-3(2H)-one, 2-methyl-1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one, and 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one. May cause an allergic reaction.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while working. Wash hands with soap and water after use. Do not pour down the drain.

How to work with it

  • Low viscosity, for fluid work. For impasto, the right choice is a high-viscosity paint.
  • Flow and transparency are adjusted with acrylic mediums, also for airbrushing; water is kept for cleaning tools.
  • On fabric, with textile medium. Mixing the colour with a textile medium keeps the dried film flexible, prevents cracking and helps keep the colour from bleeding through the weave.

Frequently asked questions

What pigment does it contain?
A single pigment: PR170 (Pigment Red 170 in the Colour Index), from the naphthol group, synthetic organic pigments developed in the early 20th century.
Is it opaque or transparent?
Semi-opaque: it allows some light through and falls between opaque and transparent colors.
What is its lightfastness?
Lightfastness II (very good) on the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) scale.
What is the difference between Soft Body and Heavy Body?
Viscosity. Both ranges have compatible binders and the same pigment load, and the low-viscosity Soft Body range was formulated earlier. It is not equivalent to diluted thick paint: thinning a high-viscosity paint with water or mediums reduces the concentration and weakens the color.
Can it be diluted with water?
To modify the flow or transparency, it is recommended to adjust with acrylic mediums and reserve water for cleaning tools.
What surfaces can it be applied to?
The Soft Body range can be applied to stretched canvas, paper and cardboard, photographic paper, wood, fabric, glass, plaster and brick, clay, and ceramics.
Is it suitable for airbrushing, screen printing, and pouring?
Yes: the Soft Body range is suitable for all three techniques. To modify the flow, it is recommended to adjust with acrylic mediums and reserve water for cleaning tools.
Does the 946 ml bottle have a nozzle?
Yes. It has a screw cap with an integrated cannula. In the Soft Body range, the nozzle is tapered, has cut marks, and its width can be adjusted by trimming it with a utility knife.
