Liquitex Professional Soft Body Mars Black 3.78 L — fluid, opaque, single-pigment acrylic for large surfaces and murals

Artists’ low-viscosity acrylic paint: a water-based acrylic polymer emulsion with a single pigment, PBk11 (black iron oxide; PBk11 is its Colour Index code, the international pigment classification). It has a pourable cream consistency, a satin finish and an opaque colour. It has the same pigment load as Liquitex Heavy Body, the brand’s thick version: what changes is the viscosity, not the pigment load.

What is it used for?

  • Large surfaces and murals.
  • Glazes, blends and gradients.
  • Fine detail and crisp edges (hard-edge).
  • Airbrush, pouring, screen printing and printmaking.
  • Collage, mixed media and watercolour-style techniques.
  • Supports: canvas mounted on a stretcher, photographic paper, plaster and brick, clay and ceramic, paper and cardboard, wood, fabric and glass, as long as the paint adheres to the support; when in doubt, test first.

Why choose Liquitex Soft Body Mars Black?

  • A single pigment: PBk11, black iron oxide. No pigment mixtures in this colour.
  • Excellent lightfastness (ASTM I). ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials, a US standards body.
  • Opaque colour.
  • Fluidity with a professional pigment load: low viscosity with the same pigment load as Liquitex Heavy Body.

Presentation and storage

  • Presentation: 3.78 L plastic bottle
  • Store it in its original container, closed, in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Reference shelf life of Liquitex products: 5-7 years tightly closed, at room temperature and uncontaminated
  • Cleaning brushes: remove the excess, rinse with water and wash with soap and water, without submerging them above the ferrule.

Liquitex is part of the Colart group.

The limits, stated plainly

  • Adhesion: it can be used on any support the paint adheres to. On other supports, and when combining it with acrylics from other brands, do an adhesion test first.
  • Dilution: water is the solvent of the emulsion, but mediums are recommended for modifying the paint, and water for cleaning; this keeps the colour intensity and archival quality.
  • Storage: avoid extremely high or low temperatures and direct sunlight; the shelf life given above applies when stored closed, at room temperature and uncontaminated.
  • Incompatibilities: strong acids and strong bases; do not mix it with them.

Safety

  • Mixture not classified as hazardous under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP, classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures). No pictograms, no signal word and no hazard (H) or precautionary (P) statements.
  • EUH208 (CLP supplemental information statement): “Contains reaction mass of 5-chloro-2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one and 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one (3:1) (CMIT/MIT), 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one (BIT), 2-methyl-1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one (MBIT). May produce an allergic reaction.”
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Wash your hands with mild soap and water before eating, drinking or smoking.

Frequently asked questions

What pigment does the Mars Black contain?
A single pigment: PBk11, black iron oxide. PBk11 is its Colour Index code, the international pigment classification.
What is the difference between Soft Body and Heavy Body?
Both have the same pigment load. Soft Body is low-viscosity, fluid, with a pourable cream consistency; Heavy Body is the brand’s thick version.
How much does the 3.78 L bottle cover?
As a guide, a gallon (3.78 L) of a paint of this viscosity covers about 37 m². It varies with the thickness of the layers and the surface.
Can I paint over it in oil?
Yes: a canvas painted with acrylic can be painted over again with acrylic or with oil.
Can it be diluted with water?
Water is the solvent of the emulsion, but mediums are recommended for modifying the paint, and water for cleaning; this keeps the colour intensity and archival quality.
How long does it keep?
As a reference for Liquitex products, between 5 and 7 years tightly closed, at room temperature and uncontaminated.
Does it carry hazard pictograms?
No. It is a mixture not classified as hazardous under the CLP. It carries the EUH208 statement because of its preservatives: it may produce an allergic reaction. Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
