Liquitex Professional Matte Varnish 3.78 L — Permanent Matte-Finish Acrylic Varnish for Acrylic Artwork
100% acrylic polymer varnish, water-based, with a matte finish. It seals finished acrylic artwork with a matte, transparent acrylic layer. It is a permanent varnish: once dry it cannot be removed. It is intended only for acrylic colours and mediums.
What is it used for?
- Sealing a finished acrylic painting with a matte, transparent acrylic layer.
- Protecting the work from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
- Protecting the surface, which resists the retention of dirt and dust.
- Work that is to be transported or exhibited: it improves the durability of the surface.
- Indoor and outdoor work.
- Adjusting the degree of gloss by mixing it with the ultra-gloss, gloss and satin varnishes in the same range; the formulas are compatible. Mix without whisking, so as not to trap air bubbles that leave a hazy effect.
Why choose Liquitex Professional Matte Varnish?
- 100% acrylic polymer, water-based, made in France.
- Does not yellow. Resists discolouration — yellowing and hazing — caused by humidity, heat and UV radiation.
- Dries to form a flexible, hard, non-tacky film, water-resistant once dry.
- Semi-opaque when wet, transparent when dry. It spreads and levels well.
Presentation and storage
- Presentation: 3.78 L tub (1 US gallon), 1 unit
- Store in a cool, ventilated place, out of direct sunlight.
- Origin: made in France
Labelling information. EUH208 (European Union supplemental hazard statement): Contains 2-Methylisothiazol-3(2H)-one (MIT). May produce an allergic reaction.
How to apply it
- It is a permanent varnish. For that reason, a test on a small area is done first.
- For acrylic colours and mediums.
- Varnish with the paint completely dry: 72 hours to 2 weeks, depending on thickness.
- Use it as supplied, stirred gently, and spread it without going back over it with the brush: this keeps the finish clean, with no cloudiness.
- Apply with a synthetic-bristle brush reserved for varnishing, in long, even strokes from top to bottom, in a ventilated, dust-free space.
- An area left uncovered is varnished once the coat is dry.
- Thin coats, allowing each to dry before applying the next. The number of coats and the waiting time between them are those printed on the container. If a greater thickness of protection is needed, the base coats are applied with gloss varnish from the same range and the matte varnish is kept for the final coat.
Frequently asked questions
Can this varnish be removed later?
No. It is a permanent varnish: once dry it cannot be removed. For that reason, a test on a small area beforehand is recommended.
Is it suitable for varnishing an oil painting?
It is intended only for acrylic colours and mediums.
How long should I wait before varnishing?
Until the paint is completely dry: 72 hours to 2 weeks, depending on the thickness of the layer.
Can it be diluted with water?
No. Nor should it be shaken or gone over vigorously with the brush: a hazy finish may result. Stir gently before use.
What is it applied with?
With a synthetic-bristle brush reserved solely for varnishing, in long, even strokes. Do not apply with a roller or a foam brush. Afterwards, wash the brush with lukewarm water and soap.
Why does it look whitish when applied?
It is semi-opaque when wet and becomes transparent as it dries.
Can an intermediate finish between matte and gloss be achieved?
Yes, by mixing it with the ultra-gloss, gloss or satin varnishes in the same range. Mix without whisking, so as not to trap air bubbles that leave a hazy effect.
Does it yellow over time?
It does not yellow. It resists the yellowing and hazing caused by humidity, heat and ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
