Liquitex Professional Gloss Varnish, 3.78 L Tub — Permanent Acrylic Varnish for the Final Finish of Acrylic Artwork

100% acrylic polymer varnish with a gloss finish, for the final varnishing of work painted with acrylic colours and mediums. It is a permanent varnish: once applied it cannot be removed. In the container it is a white liquid, between semi-opaque and translucent; as it dries it becomes transparent and forms a flexible, hard, non-tacky film.

What is it used for?

  • Final varnishing of acrylic artwork: it seals the surface with a glossy, breathable acrylic layer that protects against damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
  • Evening out the gloss of the surface, increasing colour saturation and protecting the work from dust and dirt, like the other varnishes in the range.
  • Work that is to be transported or exhibited: it improves the resistance of the surface.
  • Indoor and outdoor work: it is designed for both uses.
  • Adjusting the degree of gloss by mixing it with the ultra-gloss, satin and matte varnishes in the same range. Mix without whisking: trapped air clouds the film.

Why choose Liquitex Professional Gloss Varnish?

  • 100% acrylic polymer: white when wet, transparent when dry.
  • Does not yellow and resists the hazing caused by humidity, heat and ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
  • Water-resistant once dry, with a flexible, hard, non-tacky film.
  • 3.78 L tub: as a general rule for the liquid varnishes in the range, one gallon (3.78 L) covers about 37 m². The figure is approximate: it varies with the thickness of the coats and with the support.
  • Made in France.

Presentation and storage

  • Presentation: 3.78 L tub (1 US gallon) with lid and handle
  • Keep in the original container, tightly closed, in a cool, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • Products in the range must be stored above −12 °C: below that they crystallise irreversibly.
  • Shelf life: 5 to 7 years for the products in the range, at room temperature, with the container tightly closed and not contaminated with tap water or dirty tools.
  • Tools are wiped with paper or a cloth and washed with lukewarm water and soap before the varnish dries. Leftovers are not poured down the drain.

Liquitex belongs to the Colart group.

How to apply it

  • It is a permanent varnish, a final protective coat. For that reason, a test on a small area is done first.
  • For acrylic colours and mediums, with the paint completely dry: 72 hours to 2 weeks, depending on thickness.
  • Use it as supplied, stirred gently: with no water and without shaking the container, the dry film is clean, with no bubbles or haze.
  • Apply with a brush, in long, even strokes from top to bottom, working from one side to the other, in a ventilated, dust-free space.
  • Two to three thin coats. Allow a minimum of 3 hours of drying between coats; waiting 24 hours is the safest.
  • An area left uncovered is varnished once the coat is dry: this keeps the film transparent.

Safety

Contains 2-Methylisothiazol-3(2H)-one, adipic acid dihydrazide (adipohydrazide). May produce an allergic reaction.

Use with good ventilation. Do not eat, drink or smoke while using it and wash your hands afterwards. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with water. In case of contact with skin, wash with plenty of water.

Frequently asked questions

Can the varnish be removed once dry?
No. It is a permanent varnish: once applied it cannot be removed. For that reason, a test on a small area beforehand is recommended.
How long should I wait before varnishing an acrylic?
Until the paint is completely dry: 72 hours to 2 weeks, depending on thickness.
How many coats are applied and how long should I wait between them?
Two to three thin coats. Allow a minimum of 3 hours of drying between coats; waiting 24 hours is the safest.
Can it be diluted with water?
No. Diluting it, shaking the container or going over the same area repeatedly produces bubbles on the surface and a hazy look when dry. Stir gently before use.
What is it applied with?
With a brush, with long, even strokes from top to bottom, working from one side to the other. Do not apply with a roller or a foam brush.
Why is it white in the tub?
When wet it is a white liquid, between semi-opaque and translucent. As it dries it becomes transparent.
What area does the 3.78 L tub cover?
As a general rule for the liquid varnishes in the range, one gallon (3.78 L) covers about 37 m². The figure is approximate: it varies with the thickness of the coats and with the support.
Can a tailor-made satin finish be achieved?
Yes. It can be mixed with the ultra-gloss, satin and matte varnishes in the same range to adjust the degree of gloss. Mix without whisking: trapped air clouds the film.
