Flashe Black 265 by Lefranc Bourgeois — ultra-matt, opaque black, in a 5 kg tub

Flashe is the extra-fine vinyl paint from Lefranc Bourgeois: pigment in a vinyl resin emulsion. It gives a velvety matt finish, dilutes with water and becomes indelible once dry. This is Black 265, an opaque colour with two pigments: synthetic black iron oxide (PBk11) and carbon black (PBk7), by their Colour Index designations.

What is it used for?

  • Matt painting on canvas and wood.
  • Grounds and base coats for painting over later in oil or acrylic, also in large formats and flat areas of matt colour.
  • Trompe-l’œil, theatre sets and advertising sets.
  • Interior wall decoration.
  • Work to be scanned or digitised: the matt finish of the Flashe range does not alter the colour with reflections.
  • Washes and patinas: for this, the Flashe range is diluted with between 1/3 and 2/3 water.

Why choose Flashe Black 265?

  • A range with a history of its own: Flashe was launched in 1954 and is made in France.
  • Opaque black: the opaque colours in the Flashe range —and this black is one— cover in a single application.
  • Excellent lightfastness (★★★ on the Lefranc Bourgeois scale).
  • Directly on non-greasy supports, without priming: wood, textile, leather, metal, paper, polystyrene, glass and plastic.
  • Several application techniques in the Flashe range: brush, undiluted (a semi-flexible one is recommended), sponge brush or flexible spatula; diluted, also by spray gun or airbrush.

Presentation and storage

  • Presentation: 5 kg tub (quantity expressed by weight, not by volume).
  • Store only in the original container, tightly closed when not in use, in a cool, well-ventilated place.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and avoid extremely high or extremely low temperatures.
  • Cleaning tools in the Flashe range: with water if the paint is fresh; with lukewarm water and alcohol if it is already dry.

Limits of use

  • Non-greasy supports and grounds for oil: it is applied directly, without priming, on non-greasy supports. With oil, it is intended as a ground, that is, under the oil paint, not on top of it.
  • Exterior: for exterior work, varnishing is recommended.
  • Varnish and tone: in the Flashe range, gloss varnish darkens the colour by one tone and brightens it. To keep the tone, use matt varnish.
  • Dry paint: it is indelible. Clean tools with water while the paint is fresh.
  • Incompatibilities: strong acids and strong bases. Keep the paint away from them.

Safety information

  • Classification: mixture not classified as hazardous under Regulation No 1272/2008 of the European Union (CLP, on the classification, labelling and packaging of chemical products).
  • Hazard pictogram: none.
  • Signal word: none.
  • Hazard statements (H statements): none.
  • Precautionary statements (P statements): none.
  • Supplemental information (EUH208, mandatory when a mixture contains a substance that can cause an allergy): Contains 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one; 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one. May produce an allergic reaction.
  • Precautions for use: avoid contact with eyes and skin, work in a ventilated place and do not eat, drink or smoke while using it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Flashe acrylic or vinyl?
Vinyl. The binder is a vinyl resin emulsion.
What pigments does Black 265 contain?
Two: synthetic black iron oxide (PBk11) and carbon black (PBk7). It is an opaque colour.
Does it cover in one coat?
The opaque colours in the Flashe range —and this black is one— cover in a single application.
What lightfastness does it have?
Excellent: three stars (★★★) on the Lefranc Bourgeois scale, the one for colours with full lightfastness even when heavily diluted.
Does the support need priming?
On non-greasy supports, no: wood, textile, leather, metal, paper, polystyrene, glass and plastic. Direct application is intended only for non-greasy supports.
Can it be used as a ground for painting over later in oil?
Yes. It is intended for preparing grounds for oil or acrylic painting, also in large formats. It goes underneath, as a base coat.
How is it diluted? Can it be used with an airbrush?
With water. In the Flashe range, undiluted it is applied with a brush; for washes and patinas, with between 1/3 and 2/3 water; for spray gun or airbrush, diluted as needed.
Can it be varnished? Does it change the colour?
Yes. In the Flashe range, matt varnish keeps the tone; gloss varnish darkens it by one tone and brightens it. For exterior work, varnishing is recommended.
