Lascaux Tusche — inks for making printmaking and screenprinting positives
A range of ready-to-use, water-based tusches from Lascaux, designed for creating positives for light-sensitive printmaking processes. The positives can be used with water-based screenprinting, acrylic-resist etching, solar plate printing and traditional printmaking methods. The tusche marks will ultimately print.
They are for making opaque hand-made marks on smooth or grained PVC sheet, and also for enhancing or altering photographic, digital or photocopied positives. They can be used straight from the bottle or diluted with Lascaux Tusche diluting liquid, water or tannin mixtures. Each tusche behaves differently, from fluid, fast-drying and waterproof to viscous, slow-drying and re-wettable, and they are coloured for easy identification so they can be combined in one image.
- Tusche wash: handles like ink; diluted, it gives the gradated washes typical of stone lithography. Scratching into the dry marks creates fine non-printing lines.
- Tusche wash/spray: can be applied with a simple airbrush and is required if Lascaux Lift Solution is to be used; allows tonal effects similar to aquatint. It is also suitable for washes and, diluted, gives a further range of washes.
- Tusche waterproof: semi-viscous, fast-drying, waterproof and scuff-resistant, with homogeneous covering power. Diluted, it dries to resemble the “toad-skin” washes found in zinc-plate lithography.
- Tusche water-soluble: viscous; applied in a smooth, even layer that can be scratched away to create fine non-printing lines. Also suited to offsetting and pattern-making. Diluted, it dries to granular washes; dry marks can be re-wet and altered.
- Tusche soft-ground effect: viscous and slow-drying, designed for effects similar to soft ground in etching: soft non-printing drawings and impressions of fabric, leaves, feathers and other collage materials. Diluted, it dries to granular washes; dry marks can be re-wet.
Some substrates have a greasy surface that repels the tusche; degrease them with household detergent before use. Clean brushes, tools and surfaces with warm soapy water before the tusche dries; dry tusche can be removed with household cleaners.
