Lascaux Studio Bronze — acrylic with real metal alloys, in 8 shades

Lascaux Studio Bronze Original is a range of 8 metallic acrylic colors made in Switzerland: pure acrylic resins with stabilized, lightfast metal alloys. It gives a distinct metallic shine with high coverage, has a viscous, smooth and soft consistency, is diluted with water and dries to a satin-matte, flexible and water-resistant film. It contains real metal—brass, copper, aluminum or iron-chromium, depending on the color—and that is what sets it apart from Lascaux Artist Metallics, made with mineral effect pigments.

What is it used for?

• Art, design and decoration: surfaces and pieces with a high-coverage metallic finish.
• Interior design and architecture: large surfaces and interior wall design. Manufacturer’s reference: the interior color design by the artist Carmen Perrin for the Alhambra Theatre in Geneva (2014).
• Frame making.
• Outdoors, with 995 Aluminum and 997 Steel: these are the two shades the manufacturer specifies for outdoor use, with mandatory protection with Lascaux Transparent Varnish UV (a transparent varnish with an ultraviolet filter). The gold shades, the copper and the Britannia silver work indoors.

• Genuine metal alloys, declared color by color: gold shades 990-993, brass (copper and zinc); 994, copper; 995, aluminum; 996 and 997, iron-chromium. 996 also contains the pigments PW20, PW6, PR101 and PW15 (Colour Index codes: PW = pigment white, PR = pigment red).
• Lightfast (maximum lightfastness, *** in all 8 colors) and non-browning, according to the manufacturer, who recommends protecting them with Lascaux Transparent Varnish diluted 4:1 with water against abrasion, humidity and oxidation.

• Optimal adhesion to practically any clean, non-alkaline surface.

Packaging and storage

• Packaging: 85 ml, 250 ml and 500 ml bottles and 5 l bucket.
• Colors: gold tones 990 Rich Pale Gold · 991 Pale Gold · 992 Dark Gold · 993 English Green Gold · 994 Copper · 996 Britannia Silver; silver tones 995 Aluminum · 997 Steel. “Pale gold”, “Britannia silver” and “steel” are shade names: the metal in each one is the one stated above.
• Storage: in containers of the same material as the original, dry and cool, away from heat and direct sunlight. Shades 990 to 995, away from oxidizing agents and from strongly acidic or alkaline materials.
• Product residues: disposed of as waste; those of shades 990 to 995, without letting them reach drains or surface water.
• Shelf life: two years of storage stability (manufacturer).

How to work with it

• Application: with any painting tool, straight from the container or diluted with water.
• Mixing within its group: the gold tones (990, 991, 992, 993, 994 and 996) mix with each other, and the silver tones (995 and 997) with each other. Studio Bronze is used without other Lascaux colors or mediums: this is what the manufacturer specifies to preserve its stability.
• To mix the metallic with other colors, Lascaux Artist Metallics, which the manufacturer declares intermixable and mixable with transparent and semi-transparent Lascaux Artist colors.
• Base: clean, non-alkaline surfaces. Depending on the absorbency and texture required, Lascaux specifies its primers and modelling pastes, for rigid and flexible bases, such as Lascaux Modelling Paste A or Lascaux Modelling Paste B.
• Protection: the dry film is water-resistant; to make it rub-resistant as well, Lascaux specifies protecting it with Lascaux Transparent Varnish diluted 4:1 with water, which protects it against abrasion, humidity and oxidation.
• Varnishing: once the paint is thoroughly dry, at least 24 hours, and in a dry environment free from cold, so that the varnish dries at its own pace and the gold shades, the copper and the Britannia silver keep their color. In humid or cold conditions the varnish dries too slowly and those shades may turn greenish.
• Field of use: Lascaux intends Studio Bronze for art, design, decoration, architecture and frame making. To reintegrate gilding or color on original works or historic frames, write to us and we will point you to C&R (Conservation-Restoration) materials.

• 992 and 993: EUH208: Contains fatty acids, tall-oil, maleated, with triethanolamine (EC No 309-692-1), 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one and reaction mass of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one (3:1). May produce an allergic reaction.
