Lascaux Structura® — extra-light texture paste for painting grounds
Lascaux Structura® is a fine-grained, very light acrylic modelling paste: a pure acrylic dispersion with modified quartz filler. It dries to a velvety, absorbent surface, in three colours: Natural (intense white), Mineral Grey (warm grey) and Black Earth (deep black). Its sister pastes in the range, Modelling Paste A, B and C, have a calcite filler; Structura, with modified quartz, is formulated for textured painting grounds, surface relief and large formats.
What is it used for?
- Textured painting grounds: as a preparation of the support, neat or diluted with water, in several layers.
- Surface relief and impasto: velvety textures and heavy impastos in successive layers, on its own or mixed with the colours, to which it gives more body.
- Large formats: because of its light weight, the manufacturer describes it as ideal for large works.
- Ground for glazes: Structura Natural is particularly suited to the glazing technique, because its fine texture gives the colours a special luminosity. Natural and Mineral Grey serve as a primer for glazes with Lascaux Aquacryl and with Sirius colours.
- Collages.
- Base for acrylic, watercolour, tempera and oil painting; oil is painted on top, without mixing.
Why choose Lascaux Structura?
- Very light: density approx. 0.8 g/cm³ at 20 °C.
- Low shrinkage and no cracking on drying, according to the manufacturer.
- Very good adhesion on practically all supports, sealing very absorbent ones first.
- Light- and age-resistant; hard and elastic at the same time, it sands well.
- Structura Natural respects the colour: it mixes with all Lascaux colours and, because of its minimal tinting strength, barely lightens them; its fine texture intensifies the colour, above all with Aquacryl and in glazes over a Structura ground.
- Compatible with all Lascaux painting mediums.
- Each Lascaux paste, its own job: Structura for fine-textured, light and luminous grounds. To supplement impasto, relief or cracks in a work under restoration, the manufacturer indicates Modelling Paste A (smooth finish) or Modelling Paste B (rough surface).
Packaging and storage
- Packaging: Natural in 250 ml, 500 ml and 1 l jars, and 5 l bucket · Mineral Grey and Black Earth in 250 ml and 1 l jars
- Storage: in a cool place, with the container dry, away from heat and direct sunlight; always in a container of the same material as the original.
- Shelf life: 4 years in the unopened container (manufacturer’s figure for its range of painting mediums, in which it includes Structura).
Lascaux Colours & Restauro (Brüttisellen, Switzerland) manufactures the Lascaux range of colours, mediums and modelling pastes.
How to work with it
- As a ground: neat or diluted with water, in several layers. Also mixed with Lascaux Primer, Lascaux Gesso or Studio White, depending on the absorbency and texture required.
- Dilution: up to 20-25 % water, which is the manufacturer’s general guideline for its products. For higher dilution, the manufacturer indicates its painting mediums.
- Very absorbent supports: seal them first with Lascaux Medium 1, Acryl Transparent Varnish 1 gloss or Hydro-Sealer, diluted approx. 1:4 with water.
- Thick impastos: in several layers, to shorten the through-drying time.
- Oil: on top of the Structura layer, without mixing it in; as a general rule, the manufacturer recommends not mixing acrylic and oil.
- Finish: the finished work can be varnished with Lascaux Transparent Varnish for protection.
- Preliminary test: before the work, a test on the same support and for the same use.
Safety
- According to its safety data sheet (SDS), the manufacturer does not classify the mixture as hazardous under Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP, the European regulation on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures).

Frequently asked questions
Structura or Modelling Paste A?
It depends on the job. To supplement impasto, relief or cracks in a work under restoration, the manufacturer indicates Modelling Paste A, with calcite filler and a smooth finish, or Modelling Paste B if a rough surface is wanted. For fine-textured painting grounds, luminous glazes with Natural and large formats, Structura, with modified quartz filler and a density of approx. 0.8 g/cm³ at 20 °C.
Why is it recommended for large formats?
Because of its weight: it has a density of approx. 0.8 g/cm³ at 20 °C, and the manufacturer describes it as extremely light and therefore ideal for large works.
Can it be diluted? With what?
With water, and as a ground it is applied in several layers. The manufacturer’s general guideline for its products is up to 20-25 % water; for higher dilution, its painting mediums.
My support is very absorbent: how do I prepare it?
By sealing it first with Lascaux Medium 1, Acryl Transparent Varnish 1 gloss or Hydro-Sealer, diluted approx. 1:4 with water. With very absorbent supports sealed, the manufacturer gives Structura for practically all supports.
Can I paint in oil on top?
Yes, on top: an acrylic layer can be overpainted in oil. As a general rule, the manufacturer recommends not mixing acrylic and oil, so the oil goes in its own layer, over Structura.
Does it work as a ground for glazes?
Yes, above all Structura Natural: its fine texture gives the colours a special luminosity and intensifies them, in particular with Lascaux Aquacryl. Natural and Mineral Grey serve as a primer for glazes with Aquacryl and with Sirius colours.
How are thick impastos built up?
In several successive layers, to shorten the through-drying time. Structura can be used on its own or mixed with the colours, to which it gives more body.
Which colours are there and how does each one look when dry?
Three: Natural, an intense white; Mineral Grey, a warm grey; and Black Earth, a deep black. All three dry to a velvety, absorbent surface.
