Lascaux etching resists and coatings — solvent-free acrylic resists for etching

The Lascaux range for etching (ARE, Acrylic Resist Etching), developed together with professional printmakers. These acrylic resists are an alternative to traditional acid resists — the coatings that protect the plate from the acid bite — and give all the marks associated with traditional materials, for every working method.

  • Hard resist: a ready-to-use clear hard resist (or ground), applied to the plate by brush on copper, zinc or steel. When dry it is highly acid-resistant and can be drawn into with an etching needle, roulette, scraper, steel wool, etc. Its soft, waxy feel lets the needle glide.
  • Plate-backing resist: a tinted, scratch-proof resist applied to the edges and the back of the plate to prevent undesired biting in the acid bath.
  • Stop-out resist: a tinted resist that is easy to apply and, when dry, can be drawn into with etching tools. It is used to paint the plate, to stop out lines when step-biting, and to edit or correct plates.
  • Soft resist: a slow-drying resist designed to offset easily, used for soft crayon- or pencil-like drawings, for direct broad line drawings and for textures from collages.
  • Wash resist: a tinted, granular resist used together with Aquatint spray resist for effects similar to watercolour or tusche washes.
  • Aquatint spray resist: a tinted resist sprayed directly onto the plate, creating layers that are easy to control. It is used with Lascaux Lift solution, with other lift methods, with stencils and with Wash resist.
  • Black coating and White coating for Hard resist: applied over Hard resist to make the drawing highly visible. They are not acid-resistant: they must be removed with water before the plate is stopped out or etched.
