Hollytex® 3257 (Lascaux) — the smooth polyester nonwoven for paper and canvas
Hollytex® 3257 is a spunbond polyester nonwoven —polyester filaments bonded without weaving— from Ahlstrom, distributed by Lascaux for paper conservation. It is produced by hot calendering, a process that makes the web more uniform and smooths the surface by laying down loose fibres: that is why it is smoother than Reemay. It is indicated when there is concern that the texture of the support could transfer to the paper or to softened media, and in paintings on canvas, as an interleaf for linings.
What is it used for?
- Intermediate support for washing paper: it holds the sheet and lets you lift it out of the bath with minimal handling, including when texture transfer from the support to the paper or to soft media is a concern.
- Drying satin-finish or coated paper: Hollytex is indicated, because on very smooth papers the texture of the support can change the sheen.
- Separating layer between sheets of blotter.
- Linings with a drying fabric: intermediate layer between the fabric and the Japanese lining paper.
- Paintings on canvas: nonwoven interleaf between the original canvas and the lining canvas, and strip linings adhered to the edges of the reverse with BEVA 371 film.

Where does Hollytex go in a membrane humidification sandwich?
As a layer on each side of the object, between the object and the rest of the package. In the set-up with a humidification membrane, this layer prevents colour softened by moisture from sticking to the cover sheet and eliminates the risk of condensation. Blotter and membrane are in the works on paper and parchment collection.
What is Hollytex used for in wet lining of paper?
When lining water-sensitive objects, the lining tissue with its adhesive is humidified between two sheets of Hollytex, and the object is covered with another sheet before drying between blotters under pressure. Hollytex keeps the tissue from sticking to the blotter, and its slight adhesion to the tissue gives a tensioning effect during drying.
Is Hollytex used between blotters?
Yes. As well as being a support for washing paper, Hollytex is used as a separating layer between blotters.
