Reemay® — the polyester nonwoven that grips wet paper
Reemay® is a spunbond polyester nonwoven by Magnera: polyester filaments bonded without weaving, with no chemical binder and with chemical resistance. In the studio it is also called Reemay paper or Reemay fabric, although it contains no cellulose and is not woven. Compared with Hollytex, which is calendered and smoother, Reemay has more surface texture, and that texture grips wet paper well during washing. It comes in three grades: Reemay 2250, Reemay 2014 and Reemay 2024.
What is it used for?
- Intermediate support for washing paper: it lets you move the wet object with minimal handling and support weakened papers in and out of the bath.
- Traditional flattening under pressure: one Reemay on each side of the paper and, outside them, blotters or felts.
- Separation between blotter and paper, so that they do not adhere, especially where there are adhesives from earlier restorations.
- Controlled humidification with a membrane: the paper is placed between two sheets of Reemay, in contact with the membrane side.
- Drying board: fixed to a piece of board with spots of adhesive, Reemay does not stick to the repair, lets moisture through to the board, and endpapers dry flat.
Why choose Reemay?
- Polyester with no chemical binder and with chemical resistance.
- Texture that grips wet paper: it has more surface texture than Hollytex and gives the sheet good grip during washing.
- Documented in paper conservation: the washing guide of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) lists it as an intermediate support, and Reemay 2014 (34 g/m²) is cited in the literature on washing and drying paper.

Points to bear in mind
- Satin-finish or coated paper: close contact with the texture of Reemay can change the sheen of very smooth papers.
- All papers: the minimum pressure needed and the Reemay laid out smooth, because wet paper also picks up the folds and creases of the Reemay.

Which Reemay grade should I choose: 2250, 2014 or 2024?
It depends on the task. Reemay 2250 (17 g/m²) is the lightest: a fine web for interleaving and drying. Reemay 2014 (34 g/m²) is the grade for washing and drying paper, and the one cited in the literature. Reemay 2024 (71 g/m²) is the grade with the most body, for studio work without direct contact with the object.
How thick is each Reemay grade?
0.12 mm for 2250, 0.24 mm for 2014 and 0.31 mm for 2024. All three come in 50 m rolls.
Does Reemay contain chemical binders?

Can Reemay be used on a suction table?
Yes. When flattening on a suction table, a sheet of Reemay is placed over the paper: it filters out particles suspended in the water and keeps the sheet flat during the process. In vacuum systems covered with a plastic sheet, Reemay goes between the paper and the plastic, and it also stops the plastic from blocking the holes in the table.
Can Reemay be used to slow down the drying of paper?
Yes. When drying between two screens, a sheet of Reemay prevents the screen mesh from marking the paper. And placed on top of the screen, on the side away from the object, it slows down drying.
