3M Virtua Plus 11394 Safety Glasses — with temples, cord in bag

3M safety glasses with temples, clear polycarbonate lens, and anti-fog treatment, which come with a cord inside the same bag. These are the go-to glasses for the Conservation-Restoration (C&R) workshop: the ones you put on to sand stucco and take off to look at the work up close, and which, with the cord, hang around your neck instead of ending up under a tool. The limitations are detailed below.

What are they used for?

  • Sanding and leveling stucco and filler putties, with aggregate dust in suspension
  • Dusting and mechanical surface cleaning, when particles fly
  • Working with scalpels, knives, and cutting tools, where the risk is splintering and breaking blades
  • Preparation and assembly of supports: cutting fabric, stretching on frames, removing nails, staples, and tacks
  • Handling and weighing powdered pigment, which rises when opening the jar and pouring it onto the scale
  • Working outside the workshop — in situ altarpiece, scaffolding, sacristy — where you take them on and off frequently and there's nowhere to put them: the cord keeps them hanging from your neck

Presentation and storage

  • Store in a dry place, without weight on top and without resting the lens on a hard surface; it's best not to leave them loose in a drawer among cutting tools
  • Cleaning: lukewarm water, neutral soap, and a soft cloth, air dry

The stated limitations

  • The lens is polycarbonate, and polycarbonate is attacked by acetone. Acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and chlorinated solvents crack and opaque polycarbonate by contact or concentrated vapor. It is suitable for mechanical work: sanding, dusting, mechanical cleaning, and handling. For continuous work with solvents, write to us and we will find specific glasses for you
  • It is not a filtering goggle. For work with a Wood's lamp, photopolymerization, or welding, filtering goggles are needed, which is another product: write to us and we will find them for you
  • It is not a sealed laboratory goggle. It has temples and does not seal against the face, so it does not retain aerosols or very fine dust: for spraying, misting, or suspended dust, a sealed frame is needed, and respiratory protection is covered separately
  • The anti-fog treatment is damaged if cleaned with solvent or abrasive paper, because it is a surface layer. It is preserved by cleaning it only with lukewarm water, neutral soap, and a soft cloth

Does it come with a cord or do I have to order it separately?
Yes, it comes inside the bag.
Can they be worn over prescription glasses?
These have temples, so they are worn alone. The ones that go over prescription glasses are the 3M 12308 OTG, also from 3M and also with anti-fog.
Are they suitable for working with solvents?
For that, specific glasses are needed, and we can find them for you if you need them. The reason is physical: the lens is polycarbonate, and acetone and chlorinated solvents attack polycarbonate. For solvent work, specific glasses are required.
Do they have a UV filter?
It is not a filtering goggle: the lens is colorless. If you work with a Wood's lamp or photopolymerization, write to us and we will find the filtering goggles you need.
Do they fog up?
They have factory anti-fog treatment. This treatment is a layer: it degrades if cleaned with solvent or rubbed with rough paper. With lukewarm water, neutral soap, and a soft cloth, it lasts.
Does the lens have any tint?
No: it is transparent, without tint. It is not a smoked or colored lens, so it can be worn while working on the piece. For fine adjustment of chromatic reintegration, the usual criterion applies: color is judged with nothing in front of the eye.
