3M 12308 OTG Safety Glasses – Designed to Fit Over Prescription Glasses

These 3M over-the-glasses (OTG) safety glasses are for those who wear prescription glasses and don't want to remove them. They are designed to fit over your existing eyewear, hence the acronym OTG (over the glasses). The lens is made of clear, untinted polycarbonate with an anti-fog treatment stated by 3M on the packaging. Since it's untinted, it doesn't distort color, which allows you to keep them on while making adjustments in a Conservation-Restoration (C&R) workshop. The limitations are listed one by one below.

  • Dusting and mechanical surface cleaning, when particles might fly and you don't want to remove your prescription glasses
  • Sanding and leveling stucco and fillers, with airborne aggregate dust
  • Working with scalpels, knives, and cutting tools, where particles and chips might fly towards the face
  • Preparing and mounting supports: cutting fabric, stretching over frames, removing nails, staples, and tacks
  • Handling and weighing pigment powder, which can become airborne when opening containers and pouring into scales
  • Dismantling frames and auxiliary workshop carpentry

The stated limitations

  • The lens is polycarbonate, and acetone attacks polycarbonate. Acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methylene chloride, and chlorinated solvents will crack and fog polycarbonate upon contact or with concentrated vapor. These are suitable for mechanical work: sanding, dusting, mechanical cleaning, and handling. For continuous work with solvents, please contact us, and we will find the specific glasses you need.
  • These are not filtering glasses. For work with Wood's lamps, photopolymerization, or welding, filtering glasses are required, which are a different product: please contact us, and we will find them for you.
  • These are not sealed laboratory goggles. They do not seal against the face, so they do not retain aerosols or fine dust: for spraying, misting, or airborne dust, sealed frames are required, and respiratory protection is separate.
  • The anti-fog treatment is damaged if cleaned with solvent or abrasive paper because it is a surface layer. It should be cleaned only with warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth to preserve it.

Can they be worn over prescription glasses?
Yes, that's what they're designed for. The acronym OTG stands for "over the glasses": 3M states on the packaging that they can be worn over prescription glasses without removing them.
Are they suitable for working with solvents?
For that, specific glasses are needed, and we can help you find them if you require them. The reason is physical: the lens is polycarbonate, and acetone and chlorinated solvents attack polycarbonate. For work with solvents, specific glasses are required.
Do they have a UV filter?

Do they fog up?
3M declares anti-fog treatment on the packaging. It is a surface layer: it degrades if cleaned with solvent or rubbed with rough paper. It is preserved by cleaning with warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth.
Does the lens distort color?
It is transparent and untinted, so it does not distort color. This is essential for working with them during chromatic reintegration or reviewing a varnish layer.
Can they be disinfected?
With warm water and mild soap, yes. Avoid alcohol and disinfectants with solvents: the anti-fog is a surface layer, and solvents will remove it.
