Winsor & Newton Series 7 No. 10 in oak box — round Kolinsky sable brush, handmade in England
A round Series 7 No. 10 brush of natural Kolinsky sable hair, handmade in England, inside a special-edition oak box. The box contains a single brush. It is a watercolour brush: a point for detail and a broad belly for holding colour. Unlike a synthetic round, its hair is natural, of animal origin.
What is it used for?
- Detail, line and glaze in watercolour, where the work calls for precision.
- Continuous, gestural strokes, thanks to the colour load held by the belly of the brush.
- Retouching in Conservation-Restoration (C&R): the Paintings Conservation Catalog of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) cites Kolinsky sable watercolour rounds as excellent for retouching.
Why choose the Series 7 No. 10?
- Natural Kolinsky sable hair. The AIC describes it as a strong, springy and resilient hair, with excellent point and flow.
- Perfect point and broad belly for greater colour load. Brushes in the Series 7 range form a sharp point and recover their shape.
- Materials: nickel-plated ferrule, seamless and rustproof, and polished black birch handle.
- Handmade in England. Winsor & Newton set the Series 7 standard in 1866, when Queen Victoria commissioned the best watercolour brushes in her preferred size, the No. 7.
Presentation and storage
- Presentation: 1 special-edition oak box with 1 Series 7 No. 10 round brush.
- Dimensions of the No. 10 in the Series 7 range: 7.1 mm diameter ferrule and 32 mm of visible hair.
- Reference: 5017010 · EAN (the item’s European barcode): 094376970517.
- Storage: dry upright, with the hair pointing up, and store only when completely dry.
Brand: Winsor & Newton (Colart group).
The limits, stated plainly
- Never hot water: it coagulates the paint and damages the brush. Wash with cool water, or lukewarm at most.
- No harsh soaps: they strip the natural oils from the hair. Wash with mild soap.
- Do not store it damp in a pot: store it only when completely dry and with the tip reshaped with the fingers.
- Hair of animal origin: if a brush without animal hair is needed, the option is a synthetic-hair round (the frequently asked questions say which one we have).
