Bone Folder for Bookbinding and Paper Restoration

Natural beef bone folder, 150 mm long with a beveled tip. The traditional tool for folding, creasing, and burnishing paper in bookbinding and graphic art restoration.

What it is used for

Creasing and reinforcing folds, burnishing Japanese paper repairs, smoothing reinforcements, and polishing edges. The tip allows working in narrow areas; the edge, for folding and smoothing large surfaces. Essential on the desk of paper restorers and bookbinders.

Why bone

• It burnishes and polishes paper without leaving the glossy sheen that plastic leaves.
• It creates a crisp fold, with better feel and control.
• It is the traditional material for bookbinding.

It is beef bone (not ivory; no species restriction). Natural organic material: each piece has its own grain and tone.

Care

Keep the bone folder clean: bone is slightly porous and, if used dirty or with too much moisture, it can leave a grayish mark on the paper. Clean it with a cloth after each use. For intense wet work, a Teflon folder may be preferable. Avoid strong impacts, which could chip it.
