Liquitex Soft Body Cadmium-Free Red Medium — low-viscosity artist’s acrylic, opaque and with excellent lightfastness
Professional artist’s acrylic in aqueous emulsion, of low viscosity and with a satin finish. Like the whole Soft Body range, it carries the same pigment load as the Liquitex Heavy Body range: the consistency changes, not the pigmentation. It is fluid and retains a subtle brushstroke. Colour 894 is an orange-toned medium red, opaque and with high tinting strength, cadmium-free.
What is it used for?
- Large surfaces and murals: the Soft Body range is suited to covering large surfaces. The 946 ml bottle is the largest format in which this colour is supplied.
- Fine detail, hard edges, blends and gradients.
- Glazes, adjusting the consistency with an acrylic medium.
- Pouring, collage and mixed media.
- Screen printing and airbrushing, two uses for which the Soft Body range is suited.
Why choose Liquitex Soft Body Cadmium-Free Red Medium?
- ASTM I lightfastness (American Society for Testing and Materials scale; I = excellent).
- Heavy Body pigmentation in a fluid consistency: both ranges carry the same pigment load.
- An opaque, cadmium-free medium red. It is formulated as a replica of the brilliance, covering power and intensity of the traditional cadmium red medium. The Liquitex cadmium-free range was developed through laboratory tests against the equivalent cadmium colours, such as the 10:1 reduction with titanium white or opacity over a black/white chart, and through blind tests with artists.
- Minimal colour shift between wet and dry, characteristic of the Soft Body range.
Presentation and storage
- Presentation: 946 ml plastic bottle, with a screw cap and a nozzle with spout. Reusable and recyclable bottle.
- Storage: in the original container, tightly closed, in a cool, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, away from heat and ignition sources and without extremely high or low temperatures.
- Shelf life of Liquitex acrylics: 5 to 7 years, tightly closed, at room temperature and uncontaminated.
- Cleaning of tools: with water.
Liquitex, part of the Colart group. Made in France.
The limits, stated plainly
- To thin or glaze, use medium, not water: it is recommended to adjust the consistency with an acrylic medium and keep water for cleaning.
- For impasto, a different consistency: thickening it with gel can affect the intensity of the colour. It is recommended to choose a thicker-consistency paint directly.
- On fabric, use textile medium: it is recommended to mix it with a textile medium so that the paint does not run or crack.
Safety
- Mixture not classified as hazardous under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP, on the classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures). No hazard pictograms or signal word.
- EUH208 (CLP supplemental information statement): Contains reaction mass of 5-chloro-2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one and 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one (3:1), 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one and 2-methyl-1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one. May produce an allergic reaction.
- Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do not eat, drink or smoke during use. Ventilate the workplace and wash hands afterwards.
- Do not pour residues into drains or watercourses. Keep away from strong acids and strong bases.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Soft Body and Heavy Body?
Consistency. Both ranges carry the same pigment load and compatible binders: Soft Body is low-viscosity and retains a subtle brushstroke; Heavy Body is high-viscosity. It is not recommended to convert one into the other with water or gel, because it can affect the intensity of the colour: the consistency is chosen from the start.
What is its lightfastness?
ASTM I, that is, excellent on the scale of the American Society for Testing and Materials. For Liquitex colours with an ASTM I and II rating, a permanence of 50 to over 100 years under gallery conditions is stated.
Does it cover like a cadmium red?
It is an orange-toned medium red, opaque and with high tinting strength. It is formulated as a replica of the brilliance, covering power and intensity of the traditional cadmium red medium.
What supports can it be painted on?
The Soft Body range is suited to stretched canvas, paper and card, photographic paper, wood, glass, plaster and brick, clay and ceramic. On fabric, it is recommended to mix it with a textile medium.
How do I thin it for glazes?
With an acrylic medium. It is recommended to adjust the consistency with medium and keep water for cleaning tools.
Can it be mixed with other Liquitex colours?
Yes. The binders are compatible across the whole Liquitex range and mixtures give stable results.
What finish does it give and how does it dry?
Satin finish. Like the whole Soft Body range, it dries flexibly and quickly, which allows layers to be built up and masked, with minimal colour shift between wet and dry.
Does it carry hazard pictograms?
No. The mixture is not classified as hazardous under CLP. It contains preservatives of the isothiazolinone family that may produce an allergic reaction (EUH208 statement): avoid contact with skin and eyes.
