The Rechargeable 2-in-1 UV 395 nm Flashlight combines a 395 nm long-wave ultraviolet light source and a white light in the same body, with zoom, six modes, and a rechargeable battery. Under ultraviolet light, materials fluoresce that are indistinguishable from each other in visible light: an aged natural varnish, a large reintegration, a gap, glue, or a biological attack. At 395 nm, this fluorescence is excited and becomes visible.
Applications
- First pass over a surface to locate areas that react differently under ultraviolet light
- Detection of marked fluorescences: varnish, extensive reintegrations, adhesives, optical brighteners
- Classroom work, where it's useful for each student to have their own light source and for everyone to observe simultaneously
- The white light in the same body for general workshop tasks
What it does and what it doesn't do
We're telling you this before you buy it, because it determines whether it's the right tool for you.
- It's good for rough discrimination. What fluoresces strongly is visible. Locating where there's something different and then returning with the appropriate instrument is a legitimate use and what it's for.
- At 395 nm, the diode emits an intense visible violet light that spills over the field. This veil obscures weak fluorescence—a recent retouch, a difference in varnish thickness, one resin over another—and reads as "nothing here." Contrast is gained by reducing ambient light, not by increasing power.
- It is not a document examination lamp. For that, three things are needed simultaneously: a peak at 365 nm, a barrier filter that blocks visible light, and declared irradiance at a defined working distance. This flashlight does not declare any of the three.
- Its observations are not comparable with each other. The zoom changes the irradiance depending on the position, and the added white light also comes into play. Two observations by the same operator of the same area, with the zoom at a different point, cannot be compared side-by-side.
- The published interpretation of fluorescences is based on 365 nm. If the excitation is not as described in the literature, comparing what you see with what the literature describes is no longer valid.
Before turning it on
- Never look directly at the light source or its specular reflection in glossy varnish, glass, or burnished gold.
- Certified UV filter glasses throughout the observation, also for anyone accompanying.
- Never on exposed skin for prolonged periods.
- Limit the exposure time of the artwork. During a UV examination, the artwork receives more radiation than in a photographic shot, and ultraviolet radiation causes irreversible photochemical reactions: turn on, look, turn off.
