Lascaux Medium for Consolidation — The consolidant for water-sensitive layers

Medium for Consolidation (4176) is an aqueous dispersion of extremely low-viscosity acrylic copolymer, developed with the Swedish National Heritage Board for consolidating medieval polychromy on wood. It penetrates through cracks without leaving a visible surface film, and consolidates burnished gilding and delicate tempera without swelling them and without leaving water rings. It comes ready to apply: no weighing, dissolving, or heating required.

What is it used for?

  • Consolidation of loose, powdery, or flaking paint layers
  • Polychromy on wood: polychrome sculpture, altarpieces, and estofado
  • Gilding, including burnished gilding and water gilding on gesso preparation
  • Thin layers of hide glue tempera, on wood and on canvas
  • Moisture-sensitive surfaces that cannot be swollen or marked with rings

Frequently asked questions

Does it need to be prepared, dissolved, or heated?
No. It comes ready to apply straight from the bottle. If your intervention requires a lower concentration, you can dilute it with distilled water, but it's optional. It does not need heat at any time.
How is it applied?
With a brush or a syringe, which are the methods indicated in the manufacturer's documentation. Due to its very low viscosity, it enters by capillarity through the cracks: there's no need to force it. Always perform preliminary compatibility and penetration tests before general application.
Is it suitable for very water-sensitive layers, such as gilding or tempera?
That is precisely its purpose. The manufacturer explicitly recommends it for burnished gilding and thin layers of hide glue tempera, which are consolidated without swelling and without water ring formation. If the layer is particularly delicate, you can use white spirit as a pre-wetting agent.
What supports can it be used on?
The manufacturer's documentation mentions wood and textile supports. If your intervention is on another type of support, please write to us on WhatsApp explaining the case and we will tell you if this is the right material or if there is a more suitable one for your work.
Is it reversible?
Reversibility is partial and in solvent, not water: the dry film is soluble in esters, aromatics, acetone, and MEK. If your intervention criterion requires reversibility in an aqueous medium, there are other consolidants that fit better — ask us and we will guide you.
How is the excess removed?
Excess is completely removed after about 24 hours of drying, with acetone or xylene.
What is the difference with Paraloid B-72?
Paraloid is prepared in solvent and you apply it to the work dissolved; this is a water-based system, which avoids introducing organic solvents into the layer. The choice depends on the sensitivity of your paint layer to water.
It arrived with precipitates, is it in bad condition?
No. Any precipitates that may appear during storage should be filtered before use and do not invalidate the product.
