Cyclododecane is a volatile waxy material that sublimes at room temperature, and the time depends on thickness, temperature, ventilation and the porosity of the support: 10 °C more roughly halves it, and applied molten it takes two to three times longer than in solution. In conservation-restoration, it is used as a consolidant and temporary masking agent to protect sensitive surfaces during aqueous treatments, cleaning, or transport. Water-repellent. It is not classified as hazardous and its acute oral toxicity is very low; there is no occupational exposure limit and no published carcinogenicity studies, and it is suspected of being persistent and bioaccumulative. Original Kremer Pigmente product.
Why choose Cyclododecane?
- Reversible temporary protection: sublimes completely. The time frame ranges from one day to several months depending on the support and how it is applied — on terracotta, five months in solution and around nine when applied molten have been documented.
- Water repellent: isolates the area from water and aqueous solutions. The effective water-repellent protection lasts 2-3 hours on render, even though the material takes weeks to disappear.
- Applied melted (58-61 °C) or dissolved in White Spirit / hydrocarbons.
Uses and applications
- Masking and temporary protection of surfaces during aqueous cleaning.
- Temporary fixing/consolidation of fragile areas.
- Spot protection during handling and transport.
