Why is red bole used and not another color?
The color of the bole influences the final tone after burnishing. Red is classic for warm gilding; yellow and black versions also exist depending on the desired effect.
Is it applied directly to wood?
No, it is applied over a previously prepared gesso base.
What is the gold applied with afterwards?
In water gilding, the gold leaf is laid by wetting the bole with gilder's liquor: water with a little glue and, depending on the technique, a little alcohol. Once dry, it is burnished with an agate burnisher.
