Lascaux Acrylic Sizing 2005 — pre-sizing for canvas, solvent-free

Sizing 2005 is the water-based sizing Lascaux uses to prepare raw canvas before priming. It is a thick liquid, 3,000 to 4,000 mPa·s at 20 °C, dilutable in water and free of solvents and plasticisers. Unlike a traditional animal-glue ground, it does not gel when cold and needs no heating: it is applied as it comes, at room temperature.

What is it used for?

  • Sizing raw linen freshly stretched on a frame, before applying gesso
  • Sealing the weave of a porous cotton so the priming does not sink into the fabric
  • Reducing bleed-through of paint to the back of the canvas
  • Preparing a flexible, porous support that will receive oil paint

Why choose Sizing 2005?

  • Not classified as hazardous under the CLP Regulation on chemical products: no pictogram and no signal word. It is not dangerous goods in transport either
  • Colourless: it dries without altering the colour of the fabric, as the sample on raw linen shows
  • Dilutes and cleans up with water, with no need for solvents in the studio
  • At 3,000 to 4,000 mPa·s it is a thick liquid that stays where you put it instead of running through the weave
  • Excellent penetrating power and highly economical: a diluted litre covers a great deal of canvas
  • Declared elastic, age-resistant and non-yellowing

How to apply it

  • By brush: diluted 1:1 with water, spread evenly and generously. By palette knife: undiluted
  • Coverage: around 80 ml/m² per coat, depending on how it is applied and on the support
  • Stretch the canvas taut before sizing it. It may slacken as it dries, depending on the weight and weave of the fabric: if so, re-stretch it before priming
  • On fibrous fabrics, sand the sizing once thoroughly dry with the finest sandpaper or a pumice block
  • Work with the support and the room at 8 °C minimum
  • It takes an acrylic primer on top: Lascaux Primer, Gesso or Structura

Presentation and storage

  • Presentation: 500 ml jar, 1 litre jar and 5 litre bucket
  • Supplied to order, usually around two weeks from order confirmation
  • Store in a cool, dry place, in its original container, away from heat and direct sunlight

Lascaux Colours & Restauro has manufactured in Brüttisellen, Switzerland, since 1963.

Where it should not be used

  • Not to be applied to the textile support of an original artwork, front or back. Its place is new canvas, and there it has no such limitation
  • It is not a relining adhesive nor a paint-layer consolidant. If that is what you need, write to us and we will point you to the product that does it
  • It does not replace a traditional animal-glue and filler ground, nor does it aim to reproduce one. It is a different thing, for a different way of working
  • It is a painting medium, not a material for intervention on cultural heritage

Safety

  • EUH208 — Contains 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one and the mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one and 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one (3:1). May produce an allergic reaction.
  • EUH210 — Safety data sheet available on request.
  • If you are already sensitised to isothiazolinones, avoid contact. Use protective goggles against splashes
  • If it gets on your skin, wash with soap and water. Do not use solvents or thinners
  • Do not pour down the drain
