Frequently asked questions

How is it prepared?
It is swelled in cold water for several hours and then gently heated in a bain-marie until dissolved, without boiling.
Is it the same as generic carpentry fish glue?
Not necessarily. Generic glues may contain preservatives and are not documented for conservation; this is sturgeon isinglass, pure collagen.
Why not use Titebond Genuine Hide Glue?
According to its own Safety Data Sheet (SDS 5017), Titebond Genuine Hide Glue contains ammonium thiocyanate and cyanoguanidine as additives — sulfur salts not recommended near soft metal or gilding.
How long does it last once prepared?
A few days refrigerated. It is recommended to prepare only the amount needed for the work session.
